A house fire was reported by dispatch in the 2700 block Thorpe. Upon arrival crews found smoke showing and initiated a fast attack.
The engine company quickly found a fire in the living room area of the house, where surprisingly an elderly gentleman was attempting to extinguish the fire in heat and smoky conditions. Heavy smoke was encountered int he home and the elderly man was taken to hospital for smoke inhalation (despite his disapproval ). The fire was rapidly knocked down and extinguished however the home suffered heavy smoke damage which brought the fire damage value up.
There were no other injuries in this fire.
Did you know?:
Portable fire extinguishers should be used only if safe to do so in the very early stages of a fire.
- Smoke is the number one killer of people in fires, even light smoke contains carbon monoxide and can displace oxygen from your lungs, causing you to become unconscious.
- Do not try to extinguish a large fire with a small extinguisher, the time you spend isn't going to return a positive outcome, and you may lose your opportunity to escape and become trapped and a fire victim.
